Generally, minority women face more challenges to access information regarding health problems and in accessing the services as well. Therefore Women’s Association for Integration (WAI) undertook a <\/span>new\u00a0<\/span>program to inform<\/span>\u00a0women and girls<\/span>\u00a0about sexually transmitted diseases\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>how they can get diagnoses and treatment.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Many w<\/span>omen and girls<\/span>, especially in Roma, Ashkali and Egyptian<\/span>\u00a0communities,\u00a0<\/span>are poorly informed about health care\u00a0<\/span>problems and services<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Quitting school early is especially common for girls in these <\/span>communities. The lack of education<\/span>\u00a0directly affects their health even into adulthood.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To\u00a0<\/span>improve\u00a0<\/span>this\u00a0<\/span>situation<\/span>, <\/span>WAI <\/span>offered informative lectures to\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>109\u00a0<\/span>women and girls in the villages of Medvec, Hallac and Gradime\u00a0<\/span>in<\/span>\u00a0Lipjan<\/span>\u00a0as well as\u00a0<\/span>Ali Ibish\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>Sallahane neighborhood<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and<\/span>\u00a0Dubrava village\u00a0<\/span>in\u00a0<\/span>Ferizaj.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Doctor Zekije Shala<\/span>, speaking at the lectures,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>told<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>women and girls about the importance<\/span>\u00a0of intimate care<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>about preventable diseases.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Among the topics addressed were PapTest and its importance.\u00a0<\/span>I<\/span>t was<\/span>\u00a0disturbing\u00a0<\/span>to note that\u00a0<\/span>very few women had\u00a0<\/span>taken<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>this cervical cancer<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>test<\/span>\u00a0or even<\/span>\u00a0heard of it.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

„This lecture hel<\/span>ped<\/span>\u00a0me a lot because I didn’t know<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>Pap<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Test\u00a0<\/span>wasn\u2019t<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>painful<\/span>\u201d<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>said one of the\u00a0<\/span>participants<\/span>. \u201cT<\/span>hat’s why I didn’t go before<\/span>\u201d<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u00a0<\/span>The initiative,\u00a0<\/span>\u201cHealth\u00a0<\/span>Awareness of Roma, Ashkali and Egyptian\u00a0<\/span>W<\/span>omen in the\u00a0<\/span>M<\/span>unicipalities of Ferizaj and Lipjan“<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>also enabled WAI to hold coordinating meetings with organizations\u00a0<\/span>qualified to provide\u00a0<\/span>relevant<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>health\u00a0<\/span>services.<\/span>\u00a0These included<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>Health Directorate<\/span>s and\u00a0<\/span>Office for Returns and Committees\u00a0<\/span>in Lipjan and Ferizaj.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>The aim of the meetings was to help these organizations<\/span>\u00a0impro<\/span>v<\/span>e services<\/span>\u00a0for women and girls<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Women\u00a0<\/span>were also informed about services\u00a0<\/span>available<\/span>\u00a0to them through<\/span>\u00a0public institutions for free or\u00a0<\/span>for a<\/span>\u00a0very small fee.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A<\/span>nother<\/span>\u00a0noteworthy\u00a0<\/span>outcome<\/span>\u00a0of the WAI initiative<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>is that the Health Education and Promotion Team<\/span>,<\/span> which operates within the Health Directorate of Ferizaj<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>will deliver\u00a0<\/span>further\u00a0<\/span>lectures on\u00a0<\/span>relevant\u00a0<\/span>topics women in these communities.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

T<\/span>hrough t<\/span>his initiative 16 men\u00a0<\/span>also became more aware of<\/span>\u00a0the importance and treatment of these cases.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

During th<\/span>e\u00a0<\/span>project implementation, a survey was conducted where 102 women and girls from these two municipalities were surveyed. T<\/span>he\u00a0<\/span>findings<\/span>\u00a0resulted in<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>published\u00a0<\/span>report \u201cAccess to the health services of Ashkali and Egyptian women<\/span>\u00a0and girls in the municipalities of Lipjan and Ferizaj\u201d<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
