The Kosovo Women’s Network (KWN) strongly condemns the death and rape threats made against the organisers of protests against femicide, particularly activist Anita Nikaj. We express our full solidarity with all threatened activists and call for an immediate institutional response to ensure their protection.
These threats constitute gender-based violence and intimidation. They are intended to silence women, push them out of public spaces, and punish them for demanding justice and accountability. Threats of rape and murder directly endanger women’s safety, bodily integrity, and lives. They cannot be justified as freedom of expression or political disagreement.
Women protesting against femicide are being threatened with the very same violence they are raising their voices against. This is a serious alarm for institutions and society as a whole. No woman should have to risk her life for demanding that women no longer be killed.
We call on the Kosovo Police and the Prosecution to act without delay: investigate every reported threat, identify those responsible, and bring them to justice. At the same time, we demand urgent risk assessments and concrete, immediate measures to protect the activists, in consultation with them.
Institutions have a responsibility to prevent violence. They must not wait for threats to escalate into physical attacks before taking action. Any delay in addressing these threats leaves women exposed to danger and reinforces a climate of impunity.
We call on political representatives and public institutions to unequivocally condemn these threats and reject any language that incites, justifies, or legitimises violence against women. The safety of activists and their right to protest must be protected without discrimination and regardless of their political beliefs.
Women have the right to protest, criticise those in power, and demand accountability from institutions. This right is non-negotiable and must never be conditional on remaining silent in the face of violence.
We demand protection for activists, accountability for those making threats, and immediate institutional action. Intimidation will not silence our voices or our demand for justice.
