On 15 September 2026, we received with deep sorrow the news of the passing of Flora Brovina, one of the women leaders who dedicated her life to serving Kosovo and advancing the cause of women’s rights, peace, and security. 

Through her work, she advocated for the protection of women and children, particularly during the years of the war in Kosovo, standing alongside civilians and survivors of violence. 

Flora Brovina was among the women who, since the 1990s, contributed to building a more just society and to efforts for peace and security in Kosovo. 

In recognition of her contribution to the women’s rights movement, this year the Kosovo Women’s Network (KWN) awarded Flora Brovina the annual “Sevdije Ahmeti” Award, as a gesture of solidarity, support, and appreciation for women who have contributed to the women’s rights movement. 

Flora Brovina’s contribution will remain part of the history of women who worked for a more just and peaceful Kosovo. 

Following her passing, the Kosovo Women’s Network expressed its deepest condolences to her family, friends, colleagues, and all those who knew and worked with her. KWN also sent the family of Flora Brovina a letter of condolence: 

Dear Begu and Brovina families, 

At this difficult time, on behalf of the Kosovo Women’s Network and all member organisations of the Network, we extend our deepest condolences to you. We stand with you with respect and solidarity, sharing your grief over the loss of a woman who left an important mark on the history and public life of Kosovo. 

Flora Brovina was one of the women who, through her work, courage, and dedication, contributed to advancing human rights and women’s rights in Kosovo. During the most difficult periods, she demonstrated extraordinary commitment to people and society, defending the dignity and rights of those who were most in need of support. 

We, as women’s rights activists, will remain forever grateful for her contribution to our collective efforts to empower women and advance their rights. In our journey, the contributions of women such as Flora Brovina hold a special place. 

With her own body and life, Flora Brovina faced the storms and attacks of the Serbian regime, refusing to remain silent in the defence of people and their rights. With dignity and resilience, she also endured imprisonment by the Serbian regime at different stages of our struggle for a free and independent Kosovo. For this resilience, as well as for her dedication to a more just and equal Kosovo, we remain deeply grateful. 

Her legacy also lives on in the example she left for the women and girls who continue to advocate for human rights, equality, and a more just society. Her life and work will remain part of our collective memory and of the history of women who paved the way for the efforts of younger generations. 

The memory of Flora, her work, and the values she stood for will remain a source of strength and pride for her family, colleagues, collaborators, and all the women who will remember her.
