Are you passionate about social justice, gender equality, and evidence-based policy research? Do you want to gain hands-on experience in monitoring and analysing public budgets, and gender-responsive budgeting (GRB) at the local level? The Kosovo Women’s Network (KWN) is seeking motivated students for research internships starting in August 2026. This voluntary internship will provide practical research and budget analysis skills while contributing to more transparent, accountable, and gender-responsive public budgeting and policymaking.

Background

This internship is part of an Action supported by the European Union (EU) aimed at strengthening GRB and public financial management in Kosovo. Through legal and policy analysis, desk reviews of municipal budgets, budget monitoring, the research will generate evidence-based recommendations to improve the integration of gender equality into public budgeting and fiscal policies.

The Action seeks to contribute to the overall objective of strengthening the resilience, role, and capacities of civil society in advancing transparent, accountable, and gender-responsive public finance, in line with Kosovo’s EU integration and approximation agenda. To achieve this long-term objective, the Action specifically aims to enhance KWN and its diverse members’ participation, advocacy, and influence in planning, implementing, and monitoring public budgets and public financial management reforms at both the central and local levels. Through research and evidence-based advocacy, the Action seeks to improve the allocation and use of public resources so that budgets better address the different needs and priorities of diverse women and men.

Internship Responsibilities and Opportunities

Interns will:

• Follow public consultation related to municipal budget.
• Review draft budgets, Medium Term Budget Framework, and annual budget proposals from a gender perspective.
• Support the preparation and submission of evidence- based inputs and recommendations to public institutions during budget consultations processes.
• Learn from experienced researchers and policy experts working on public finance, gender equality, and evidenced based advocacy.
• Receive a modest per diem to cover costs associated with the internship (e.g., transportation and meals).
• Have a flexible working hours and locations, allowing them to continue attending university lectures and exams.
• Be able to use this formal internship to fulfil university internship and practical experience requirements.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

• Be enrolled in or recently graduated from a university program related to economics, gender studies, or a related field.
• Have a strong interest in gender equality and public finance.
• Possess basic research knowledge and skills in qualitative and/or quantitative methods.
• Have proficiency in Albanian or Serbian, and/or English. Knowledge of multiple languages is an asset but not required.
