For years, she endured an unhappy and abusive marriage, feeling trapped by fear, social pressure and the public image of her husband, who was a well-known and respected figure in their community. The prospect of seeking help seemed overwhelming. She feared that no one would believe her, that speaking out would damage her family’s reputation, and that she would face stigma for leaving the marriage.

As her children grew older, they encouraged her to break the cycle of violence and supported her decision to seek protection and reclaim her life. Their support gave her the strength to take the first step toward safety and justice.

After learning about the free legal aid provided by the Kosovo Women’s Network (KWN), she decided to seek support. KWN’s legal advisors provided confidential legal counseling, explained her rights and represented her throughout the legal proceedings. With professional guidance and consistent legal representation, she was able to navigate the complex legal process with greater confidence.

Despite attempts to intimidate and discourage her from pursuing the case, she remained determined. With the support of KWN’s legal team, she successfully finalised her divorce, bringing an end to years of abuse and beginning a new chapter in her life.

Today, she is rebuilding her future with dignity and independence. Her story demonstrates that access to quality, survivor-centered legal aid can empower women to overcome fear, exercise their rights and make life-changing decisions, even when they face significant social pressure and powerful individuals within their communities.
